With the new season upon us so arrives a new pant shape and Spring 2019 is the turn of the split hem pant. A brilliant shape that’s both modern and flattering, the split hem pant is the perfect addition to your Spring closet collection. If you choose the right style, you’ll be able to wear your split hem pants to the office, out to date night or even to lunch with the girls. To ensure you’re able to make the most out of this fabulous trend, here’s our favorite ways to wear split hem pants and the shapes you should look for.

Slacks and Splits

The first silhouette to consider are standard slacks of course. Versatile and comfortable, slacks are every woman’s go to pant for the office. A well fitting pair of slacks should be fitted at the rear, skim over the hips and gently glide over the legs without hugging at the calf – it’s no mean feat trying to find slacks that fit just right but when you’ve found them, you’ll never want to take them off! The split hem has been introduced to slacks as a subtle but effective design addition, ramping up the drama while still allowing the pants to be suitable for work. Obviously black is the most traditional color for work wear slacks but don’t forget a deep navy or forest green can be a great alternative and is less severe than stark black. The split should be no more than 15 cm if you intend to wear them to work and leisure while you can pull off a much longer split if they aren’t for the office. Choose from high waist, low rise, or classic depending on your body type and what you prefer but do ensure the fabric isn’t crispy or harsh against the skin. Crepe, cotton and viscose are all brilliant fabric options for slacks and with a little care while washing, will stand the test of time.

Small Split Cigarette Pants

If you’re looking for an ankle slimming style, look no further than a cigarette pant with a small, front facing split. The hem of the pant should finish just above the ankle bone for the most slimming of effects and the short split adds just enough flair to make these pants stand out from the crowd. We can’t get enough of the styles with a center leg crease, adding a touch of tailoring to the look. You’ll find these styles in all of your favorite suiting colors such as charcoal grey, light grey, black and navy but coral and mustard colors are a great alternative for a brighter and fresher look. Pair with stilettos or mules for the ultimate skinny ankle look and try to avoid shoe styles that hug the ankle such as ankle boots or strappy sandals.

70’s Style Flares

Bell bottom flares are another silhouette that works so well with the split hem pant trend. Whether you opt for stiff and structured flares or a distressed denim look, the split instantly brings flares back from the depths of the psychedelic seventies and into 2019. Both full length and three-quarter length flares work in this case and like all split hem pants, the longer the split, the more drama the pant will carry. If you’re not sure you can pull off the flares look without feeling aged, try a wide leg style instead, allowing for a more streamlined effect. Look for sweet side pockets for a practical pair of pants and cuffed hems for even more gravitas. The three-quarter length style allows these pants to be worn with heels, sneakers, tennis shoes, boots or even flip flops making them a seriously versatile pant you’ll be able to wear to so many occasions simply by switching up your footwear.

If you’re really into this trend and want to run with the fluid movement a spilt hem creates, try combining it with a step hem too. Step hems have become very popular over the past few years and show no sign of disappearing – and thankfully so because we love them! Step hems look flawless on denim and dressier pants that crave a little edginess, such a small detail that makes a huge impact on how stylish (and expensive) a pair of pants look regardless of how much you actually paid for them. Pair with a classic white shirt if you’re heading down the denim route or an oversized knitted sweater with bishop sleeves to tone down dress pants and make them more casual.

Suit It Up

Finally, if you’re head over heels for the split hem, you’re definitely going to want to try a co-ord suit with split hems, the perfect 2019 twist to a classic suit set. If you’re brave, try some neutral colors like mushroom, taupe or sand but a simple black suit will look just as polished too. Don’t forget, suits aren’t just for the office, more and more we’re even seeing suits on the red carpet so why not swap your cocktail dress for a sexy suit for your next date night! Be sure to show off some cleavage for some sexy suit vibes and you’ll certainly be turning heads!
