2018 fashion is soon to be a thing of the past. From major runway trends to micro trends lasting only a few weeks, 2018 gave us a lot, some great and some not! We’re recapping on her highlights both good and bad to bring you a list of the most iconic fashion trends from this year. Cast your mind back and let’s remember some looks you tried throughout the seasons.

 Deepest Dark Denim

Dark denim never really went out of fashion but it’s definitely been the lighter blues, true blues and vintage distressed styles that have been sucking the limelight for years until 2018. We love dark denim, flattering, easy to wear and looks flawless for both casual and semi casual outfits, for us, dark denim prevails over all the others. We even saw a resurgence of double dark denim this year, the classier sister of the regular double denim ensemble. There’s really no bad way to wear dark denim, wear it in the office, on a night out, walking the dog, it doesn’t matter, you’ll look chic no matter what. We’re sad to say dark denim will probably leave stardom for 2019 but since it’s such a sophisticated look, we say keep it going!

 Purple Everything

Purple was a massive color trend for 2018, ranging from pastel lilacs to mid range mulberry and darkest, almost black purples. Purple can be a hard color to pull off, the trick being to match it to your skin tone and stick to that one shade. Everything from bags, scarves, dresses, pants, even power suits in every shade of purple imaginable were dominating the color trends this year. It wasn’t the worst trend of 2018 but it also wasn’t the greatest, let’s see if Pantone’s new color of the year for 2019 (Living Coral) can do better next year!

The Return Of The Bum Bag

Call it a bum bag or a fanny pack, this was the bag of the year for 2018. Gaining attention in the 90’s it had a massive resurgence being worn both the traditional way around the waist and also across one shoulder. Back in the 90’s the style was rather crass, chunky little pouches with multiple zippers in primary red, blue and yellow and associated almost exclusively with poorly dressed tourists on holiday. For 2018, the bum bag definitely got a chic revamp with most styles using natural toned leather and opting for a slimmer, more chic look. From a practical point of view, the bum bag reigns supreme, allowing you to be hands free and also to hide your precious wallet, keys and phone from plain sight – something those of you who live in big cities with a lot of pick pockets know to be important! We think we’ll see more from this new look bum bag in 2019, at least for the earlier part of the year, so don’t ditch them yet but the hype is mostly over, making room for a few new bag shapes.

Teeny Weeny Sunglasses

This was a bad trend for 2018 and we’re so glad it’s over! Narrow lensed sunglasses and those tiny circular ones not only weren’t a flattering look for any face shape but did nothing for keeping the sun out of our eyes, let alone protecting them from sun damage. We couldn’t quite get on board with this trend. Small, barely there sunglasses originally rose to fame in the 40’s and then again in the 90’s but for 2018 enough was enough! They looked dated and we think it’s time this trend was retired for good!

Athleisurewear Tracksuits Galore

This one is a love it or hate it kind of trend but no matter what side of the fence you’re on, we haven’t seen the end of it! Athleisurewear is one of the biggest growing sectors in the fashion industry but it was the tracksuit that took the real focus in 2018. Matching joggers and tracksuit tops in on trend colors and fabrics, made from anything and everything that would not be appropriate for working out in! That’s our main gripe with athleisurewear tracksuits – they’d be fine in the gym, only they aren’t practical enough to work out in and on the streets, they’re too easily to look sloppy. They’re kind of comfortable, we’ll give them that. We hope in 2019, if they must stay on the radar, that they become more practical. They’d be the ideal outfit for having a quick coffee with girlfriends before working out but they need a bit of finesse in order to make them gym appropriate. Fingers crossed!

See Through Plastic

Another terribly iconic trend from 2018 was see through plastic accessories, shoes and even pants! The stylized photos for campaigns or even Instagram looked pretty cool as far as shoes go but then the reality hit home and multiple bloggers came out of the woodwork to tell the truth about these plastic, see through shoes; after 20 minutes wearing time, they clouded up with foot condensation, creating a lovely warm and moist environment for breeding bacteria – yum! The see through bag idea sounded like a cool, futuristic one, but in reality, it just let everybody know exactly what you were carrying. Perfect for thieves and also just a little bit embarrassing, who needs to tell the whole world that you have a half eaten banana, 3 tampons because you’re on your period and a packet of Imodium in your purse thanks to last nights street food dinner?! And that’s all before we’ve gotten to the see through pants! As far as they’re concerned, it’s just a no, a simple, clear (pun intended) no!
