Supermodel Naomi Campbell who I’m sure needs no introduction, is getting up close and personal with the launch of her YouTube channel “Being Naomi.” It’s often said that supermodels have an expiration date but strong willed Naomi is showing no signs of slowing down. Instead, she’s actually moving with the times and not letting age define her. Rising to fame in the 90’s she’s had a fair share of the limelight as well as being know for being difficult to work with and a drama Queen through and through. Of course, she’s not the only celebrity taking YouTube by a storm, she’s following in the footsteps of Victoria Beckham now a certified Vlogger too.

Her new YouTube channel has the intent to show a different side to Naomi than the media portrays. She’s aiming to show her softer side, give a glimpse into her daily life as a business woman, model, activist and charitable works. She explained to Womens Wear Daily that she hopes the viewers who engage with her channel feel empowered to be their best selves, to actively play their role in helping this world and also to showcase who the real Naomi is and what she stands for. You might even call it a rebrand, it appears Naomi wants to be known for more than just a supermodel who in the past got a bad reputation for being rude and even getting into fights.

So what can you expect from Being Naomi? Well, there’s a number of pieces already lined up to be shown including a live stream of the Global Citizen Festival hosted in Johannesburg. Another video will talk about how she was discovered and how she got into modelling in the first place, entitled “My Journey” while other pieces are rumored to involve divulging into her New Years resolutions. Aside from the media’s perspective on her behavior, Naomi has never let anyone into her personal life, until now. She believes that she has a lot to share and feels like now is the time to really connect with her followers and fans on a direct level. She has always been afraid to share the intimate details of her life and to be so openly in the public eye but obviously she feels now is the time to break down that barrier and face her fears. Naomi has already uploaded a vlog post introducing her channel to the world and a second one which mostly professes her love for Nelson Mandela. We can also expect to see behind the scenes shootings for modelling campaigns and her global travels. There’s no word yet as to whether we’ll see some mundane daily things like what she eats for breakfast or how she does her makeup on an average day, the kinds of things everybody does but somehow seem fascinating when celebrities do it! That kind of vlog seems a little dated and honestly overplayed so here’s hoping she stays clear of that kind of content.

The launch seems to have been triggered by her switch of modelling agency. Naomi had been with agency New York Models for the majority of her career and has recently hopped over to join the models at DNA Model Management, also based in New York. The move was based largely on her want to be seen as much more than just a model and to be recognized as a cultural innovator. With 31 years of professional knowledge, we can’t agree more, the fashion industry has been for a very long time, tight lipped, so perhaps Naomi’s channel will also open up about industry secrets, the good, the bad and the downright ugly. But Naomi’s focus, at least for now will be very much focused on inspiring young women, particularly from Africa, quoted saying “I want to see if the next generation will use the things that I’ve said.”

With social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, it’s almost normal to follow celebrities and get the inside scoop on their daily life so perhaps Naomi is simply trying to keep up with the times and Being Naomi is her way of jumping on the bandwagon. She has admitted she’s a complete newbie to uploading videos and sharing things people will actually want to see but let’s hope Naomi gets to grips with it quickly and irons out any kinks that might make her channel seem stiff or unnatural. Her channel also gives the public a chance to connect with her, ask questions and even potentially guide the content she’ll provide. Many fashion brands are taking a similar strategy, asking on social media what kind of garments they want to wear and simply listening and producing in accordance, if it’s good enough for up and coming fashion brands, it’s good enough for Naomi!

It’s too early to tell whether Naomi will become a YouTube star or if her channel will take off but we’re wishing her all the very best of luck and excited to see a new side to the infamous diva!
